Stocks are a type of security that signifies an ownership position (called equity) in a corporation. The amount of ownership is determined by the number of shares a person owns divided by the total number of shares outstanding. Income is paid in the form of dividends and capital gains.

There are two main types of stock: common and preferred. Common stock owners have the right to vote at shareholders’ meetings and to receive dividends. Preferred stock owners generally do not have voting rights, however, they do have a higher claim on assets in the event of bankruptcy. Preferred stockholders are also entitled to a fixed dividend.
